THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN SHINE

This is the history of the descendants of John Shine - 1925 to 2000.

The husband of Margaret Daisy Shine, daughter of John and Ida Meltha, or Weltha, (Dewey) Shine, Edmond Clark Persinger died on April 26, 1925 in Silver City, New Mexico.

Jeremiah N. Shine, his wife Lillian and daughter Daisey moved from Mace, Idaho to Spokane, Washington sometime around the first part of 1924 according to the statement on his death certificate. It stated that he had lived at the Spokane address about 1 1/2 years when he died in June of 1925. He was buried in Wallace, Idaho.

In a telephone call to the Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home in Spokane, Washington on June 6, 2000 it was learned that Jeremiah N. Shine had three brothers still living at the time of his death on June 24th, 1925. These three were: D.C. or D. G. Shine of Chicago; E. P. Shine of Kansas City, Missouri; and B.B. Shine of Green Bay, Wis. It was difficult to read the latter part of the town name and state because it had been written in pencil. Only two records have been found of these three brothers between the 1880 Lansing, Michigan census and this record of 1925 from the Funeral Home. According to the obituary for their sister Cora, Jeremiah, Barney, Dennis and Eugene were living in Mace, Idaho, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Kansas City, Missouri in 1916 when she died. The second one we found indicates Barney was living in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1920. This individual, if our Barney Shine, was living in the household of James Kingsbury as listed on page 6 of the Enumeration District 15 for Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin. This shows him to be a son of parents both born in Ireland, able to speak english, a contractor, plumber. Barney’s age is listed as 63, which put his birth date as 1860 conflicting with the ones for the 1870 and 1880 census for Lansing, Michigan showing his birth date as 1856. There is also a conflict between those records for his place of birth. The 1870 census lists Michigan and the 1920 as Illinois. We realize there are many errors in census records due to the person supplying the information not always knowledgeable about facts of those people they are reporting.

The other brother, Thomas, and sister Margaret Cora (Shine) Parker, are not listed as surviving relatives. We know the sister died in 1916 and it is assumed Thomas is also dead but no record of him has yet been found since he appeared on the 1880 Lansing, Michigan census.

This obituary for Jeremiah N. Shine appeared in the Wallace Press Times, Wallace, Idaho on June 26, 1925.

DISTRICT PIONEER PASSES IN SPOKANE.

Jerry N. Shine, 83, Dies Thursday, Interment to be made here Today.

Jerry N. Shine, 83, a Coeur d'Alene district pioneer, died in Spokane Thursday morning, according to word received in Wallace. A complicated illness and the infirmities of old age are reported responsible for the aged man's death. He had been in poor health for several months. Mr. Shine was well known in Burke and Wallace and other cities of the Coeur d'Alene district. He came here several years prior to 1900 and for 15 years was an employee at the Standard Mine in Mace.

Born in Louisiana.

Mr. Shine was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1842. He came westward when a young man and settled in Tekoa, Washington in 1890. He was the O.W.R. & N. Company's agent at that place for several years. He is survived by his widow, who resides in Spokane; a son, J. J. Shine, of Burke; daughter, Daisy Shine, Spokane, and two brothers, Barnard Shine, Green Bay, Wis., and Eugene Shine, Kansas City, Mo.

The body was brought to Wallace last evening and funeral services will be held from Worstell's chapel at 10 o'clock today. Interment will be made in the United cemeteries.

This obituary makes no mention of Jeremiah’s brother Dennis. It must be assumed he has died some time between 1916 and now because he was listed as living in Green Bay, Wis. in the obituary for their sister Cora.

The Wallace Press Times printed this of the tribute paid to Jeremiah N. Shine on June 27, 1925.

LAST TRIBUTE IS PAID TO PIONEER.

Wallace and Burke Canyon friends Friday morning paid a last tribute to Jerry N. Shine, 83, Coeur d'Alene district pioneer, who died in a Spokane hospital Wednesday.

The services were held from Worstell's Undertaking parlors. Mrs. M. E. Fisher, Christian science reader conducted the burial rites. Several score Wallace and Burke friends were in attendance. Interment was made in the United cemeteries.

Mr. Shine came to the Coeur d'Alenes in the late 90's and from 1900 to 1915 was an employee of the old Standard mine at Mace. His death was brought on by the complications of diseases and the infirmities of old age. He had been in poor health for several months.

The grave site for both Jeremiah N. Shine and his daughter Martha has recently been located in the Greenmount cemetery. This has been very confusing because the name “Greenmount” refers only to a section of the Nine Mile Cemetery of Wallace, Idaho. That portion of the cemetery is also known as the Worstell’s section and the United Cemetery with very few people aware of the Greenmount name.

Daisey Beatrice Shine, daughter of Jeremiah N. and Lillian (Moore) Shine, married Newlee Van Liddle on May 29, 1931. The marriage ceremony took place in the Chapel of the Episcopal Cathedral in Spokane, Washington.
